Dark colored pavers can help hide stains. Ants and weeds in joints can be prevented with sealers or herbicides.

COBBLE STONE

High quality stone lasts for decades. Wide joints may encourage weeds and ants. Rough surface makes walking and driving difficult.

STAMPED CONCRETE

Cracking will likely develop. Difficult to match original color or pattern in repaired areas. Repairs leave unattractive patch.

CLAY PAVER

Irregularities in surface make them prone to damage, especially edge chipping.

ORIDINARY CONCRETE

Cracking will likely develop. Repairs and replaced sections leave unsightly patches. Oil stains difficult to remove.

ASPHALT

Wear and weather will break down surface. Black seal coat required every 2-3 years. Ruts or pothole repairs make ugly patches. Subject to erosion from oil drippings.

CRUSHED STONE OR GRAVEL

Scattered stone must be replaced and re-leveled regularly. Ruts from tires will likely develop.

Concrete floor wax serves as a sacrificial coat on decorative interior floors. As with any type of flooring, concrete does wear down over time with traffic.

Although there may already be coat of sealer, it will wear down as well and resealing interior concrete can be a nasty, smelly job that you want to avoid if possible. This makes periodic applications of floor wax a good idea. This also restores the shine to the floor.

How often you need to reapply a wax depends on how much foot traffic there is. Most residential floors can go from several months up to a year or longer before needing another coat. Fortunately, this can be a quick and simple task. There’s no need for machines or intense labor, just apply concrete floor wax with a mop.

What kind of wax should be used? Like I said, applying a floor wax doesn’t need to be a big production that involves buffing. A simple “mop on” floor wax is all that’s necessary. Clean the floor, mop on the wax, and walk away. You can find a decent concrete floor wax at any box store such as Home Depot or Lowes. Concrete/masonry supply stores sell specially designed waxes for interior concrete floors.

Concrete sealers are used to protect your concrete floor from such damaging agents as oil, road salt, stains, molds and more. A sealed concrete floor is not only easier to wash and sweep it is protected from chemicals, water and whatever traffic the floor can bear. The sealer will protect the floor from any heavy traffic and will last a lifetime. Although a sealed concrete floor is durable it is not indestructible.  You need to maintain your seal, applying a new seal every 12-24 months depending on the traffic and the sealer you use.  Your custom concrete is an investment in your home and property.  You need to treat it as such by maintaining its appearance like any quality flooring.

A garage floor coating is one of the most economical and aesthetically pleasing ways to enhance a plain gray concrete garage floor. These heavy-duty epoxy-based systems not only upgrade the look of the floor, they also increase resiliency to stains and tire marks and hide minor imperfections. With many colors to choose from for the base coating, which can be further enhanced by decorative quartz or paint chips, garage floor coatings give you a wide array of design options.

Three Budget-Friendly Decorative Finishes for Exterior Concrete

By Anne Balogh, ConcreteNetwork.com Columnist

In this ailing economy, many homeowners are cutting back on remodeling expenses and forgoing some of their dream projects. But if your dream is to install a fabulous decorative concrete driveway, sidewalk or entryway that will transform your home and boost its curb appeal, you may still be able to get the high-end look you’re after without emptying your pocketbook. Instead of spending a premium for elaborate stamped, stenciled or multicolored concrete, you can achieve equally impressive results with these three budget-friendly decorative treatments. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also get a durable, low-maintenance surface that will last for decades. Now that’s true economy!

1

Exposed Aggregate
With an exposed-aggregate finish, you can achieve spectacular effects at a reasonable cost because few additional materials (other than the decorative aggregate) are required. To get the look, your contractor simply places the concrete and then removes the top layer of cement paste by scrubbing or pressure washing to reveal the embedded aggregate. Many types and sizes of decorative aggregate are available to achieve unlimited color and texture variations. Durable and skid resistant, an exposed-aggregate finish is ideal for most exterior flatwork.

2

Rock Salt Finish
A rock salt finish is a traditional and easy method for adding subtle texture and skid resistance to plain or colored concrete. The salt leaves a speckled pattern of shallow indentations on the concrete surface, similar to the appearance of slightly pitted, weathered rock. While the pattern isn’t elaborate, it has a distinctive look not achievable with any other method. Salt finishes are attractive alone, but are particularly stunning when used in combination with colored concrete and other decorative treatments. Even better, the finish requires few additional tools and materials to produce, keeping the cost affordable.

3

Brooming and Borders
If you’re on a tight budget, you can achieve impressive results by mixing stamped or stenciled concrete borders with fields of less-expensive plain or broom-finished concrete. Using contrasting colors will give the surface even more pizazz.
